Finalist category: Workplace Inclusion Award
Finalist, Workplace Inclusion Award, 2021
We’re a team of passionate individuals from all walks of life, who have come together with the aim to make the world more accessible through the use of leading-edge technology. As a self-funded start-up, we began to develop software in 2018 in collaboration with UK universities and released our first product Caption.Ed in August 2020.
Caption.Ed is a piece of software that provides best-in-class captions for almost any audio source, from podcasts and lectures, to video calls and even face to face conversations, all with the click of a button. Captions can be customised and refined based on the subject matter and even language being used.
Our technology can now be accessed across web, desktop and mobile applications. Alongside real-time captioning the software includes a novel system for the storage and re-use of captions across users and the generation of formatted transcripts. Working with our community of ‘Captioneers’ we’ve increased our range of functionality including the ability to repurpose stored transcripts to provide intelligent note-taking, which allows our users to use Caption.Ed to make notes from meetings.
In less than a year Caption.Ed has been widely adopted across the UK and has been adopted by a large number of education providers and commercial organisations to help them improve accessibility and inclusion for their members. For our users, Caption.Ed has quickly become an indispensable tool in order to allow them to interact more independently with the world around them. Caption.Ed is an inspiring example of how assistive technologies can help disabled people achieve their goals at work, at home and in education.
