The BBC World Service provides regional and global impartial news and analysis in 44 languages. Each week its 41 websites reach 40-80m people around the globe with 85% on mobile devices.

Since 2018 the team have been rebuilding its websites from scratch to specifically focus on web performance – ensuring that users without access to high-end technologies, cheap data, and reliable information from other sources can access its impartial content as easily as possible.

The Clarion

Clarion is an innovative digital instrument that can be played with any part of the body using mouse or finger touch, but also head movement or eye movement. It works seamlessly with assistive technology like Eyegaze or Infrared head trackers, removing the barriers that can come with a conventional instrument’s shape, size or the need to bow, pluck or blow it.

Euan’s Guide is the disabled access charity that is making the world more accessible one review at a time. At the heart of the charity is the disabled access review website, EuansGuide.com, the go-to online resource written by disabled people for disabled people, where they can find and share information about a location’s and venue’s disabled access.

Every1Mobile (E1M) is a technology company that designs, builds, and runs digital social impact programs across emerging markets. It focuses on low income communities in sub-Saharan Africa and designs its solutions to be accessible to the poorest of people through the mobile devices they already have in their hands.

Power to Connect

Power To Connect was set up in April 2020 as a direct response to the COVID19 Pandemic. Together, Wandsworth Council and Battersea Power Station launched the Power To Connect initiative. Schools and Community Organisations in Wandsworth requested support with access to data and devices to help families stay connected and engage in homeschooling during the lockdown. With a two-pronged approach, the project tackles digital poverty by distributing data vouchers and laptops or tablets. 

Sign2Word

The Sign2Word app aims to radically transform the learning experience for Deaf learners and their engagement with Communication Support Workers by providing a platform, using AI technology, to translate Sign Language into written English and create a personalised sign dictionary.

Dimming Dyslexia

Dimming Dyslexia is a project that strives to help people with difficulties in literacy and reading so they can achieve as much as they are capable of. The project, which will take the form of an app, works to analyse texts and resources that students are using and translate them into an easier format to comprehend such as cartoons, videos or certain fonts that will better assist them with their particular needs, such as the dyslexic font Open Dyslexic. 

#MuseumJigsaws

The Cooper Gallery, operated by Barnsley Museums, was forced to close its doors in March 2020 due to the pandemic. Like many people and organisations, they had to explore new ways of engaging with its audience online. One of their creative ideas has been digital jigsaws, which have been made using artwork from its collections.

Clin-e-cal

Clin-e-cal is a British digital health start-up, spun out from the University of Manchester and the Manchester Foundation Trust. Its free smartphone app, Rafi-Tone, has been developed to make using an inhaler with a spacer easier and more fun for young children with asthma and wheeze symptoms.

Nishka Mathur

Nishka Mathur is 15 years old and passionate about tech literacy for young people, especially girls, from disadvantaged communities. Over the last two and half years she has designed and delivered around 40 coding workshops, directly interacting with roughly 1000 participants. 

Pollution Protector

Pollution Protector will be a device that will tell people how and what to recycle, reuse and reduce through barcode scanning. When scanning an item and it signals the user to reuse or reduce the item, the user will be directed to a specially designed website to instruct them on the course of action.

Speed Bot

The Speed Bot app detects, recognises and informs drivers of traffic signs in their live camera feed in order to improve road safety. It has been developed by Sida Li (aged 15), in response to the findings that approximately 1.35 million people die every year as a result of road traffic injuries.
