Inspiring all of us to use technology to transform the lives of disabled people
Professor Stephen Hawking has transformed our understanding of the universe and has brought science to the forefront of popular culture. As well as his many academic achievements he serves as a inspiration to us all, demonstrating how we can all aspire to face up to whatever difficulties life may throw at us. And in particular he is a perfect example of the power of technology to transform people’s lives.
Professor Hawking could not attend the Ceremony to receive his Award in 2012 but sent a recorded acceptance message which is copied below and included in the video from the Awards Ceremony.
“I am delighted to accept this award as recognition for all truly great things that disabled people can achieve when technology has given them the chance to shine. I was lucky to be born in the computer age. Without computers my life would have been miserable and my scientific career impossible.
“AbilityNet continues to help disabled people in all walks of life and the Tech4Good Awards remind us that technology is a vital part of human existence. They show us that the right tools in the right hands can help everyone regardless of our frailties to achieve our true potential and advance as civilization
“I hope that the Tech4Good Awards will inspire people to think about and the needs of everyone around them and make sure they can all benefit from the power of computers the Internet to change their lives for the better.”
