Colibri: A Head-Controlled Mouse for Affordable Digital Access
2026, Digital Inclusion Award, Finalist
Colibri stands out for combining life-changing independence with affordability. By helping more than 2,000 people regain digital access at a fraction of the usual cost, it shows how assistive tech can move from specialist to scalable.
Colibri is solving a practical but life-changing problem. People with quadriplegia, ALS or stroke often lose the ability to use smartphones and computers independently, cutting them off from work, education, communication and privacy. Existing assistive tools are often expensive, complex or hard to sustain. Colibri offers a wearable, head-controlled mouse that mounts on ordinary glasses and allows users to control phones and computers with head movement and eye blinks. The impact is already significant. Since launch in November 2021, it has helped more than 2,000 Brazilians with severe motor disabilities regain independent digital access. Dozens of users have returned to work using Colibri, including designers, lawyers, programmers, psychologists and journalists. It is also far more affordable than most alternatives, offered at around USD 29 a month compared with typical wearable head-controlled systems costing USD 1,000 to USD 2,000. This gives more people a realistic route back to autonomy, work and everyday digital life.
