SignUp Media: Sign Language for Media Platforms
2026, Accessibility Award, Finalist
SignUp Media addresses a huge global access gap in entertainment and media. With millions of Deaf users underserved by captions alone and strong early adoption already in place, it shows how inclusive design can reach mass audiences, not just niche users.
SignUp Media is tackling a major gap in digital accessibility for Deaf audiences. More than 465 million people globally are Deaf or hard of hearing, yet sign language is still missing from most mainstream digital content. Captions help, but they do not fully convey tone, emotion or cultural meaning for people whose first language is sign language. SignUp Media changes that by adding high-quality sign language to film and TV content through a browser-based platform that gives users control over interpreter size and position. The early impact is strong. Research with 305 users found that while 94% use captions, 54% said existing sign language options do not meet their needs. Since launch, SignUp Media has reached more than 25,000 weekly active users and generated over 7 million social interactions after launching in India. It has already worked with major studios and platforms to interpret hundreds of titles, helping Deaf viewers access entertainment, culture and storytelling at the same time as everyone else.
