VULKOS tackles a strategically important skills shortage with a model that could widen access to a high-value industry. If it can scale from pilot to adoption, the impact could be significant for both learners and the future semiconductor workforce.

VULKOS is tackling a major skills gap in the UK semiconductor sector. Demand for chip design talent is rising fast, yet the current pipeline is far too small. Only around 870 graduates enter the semiconductor industry each year, while 39% of the workforce is expected to retire within 15 years and the UK could face a shortage of 7,000 semiconductor designers by 2030. Traditional training is expensive, fragmented and often not practical enough for students to become job-ready. VULKOS responds with a web-based platform that combines learning, virtual labs and design tools in one place, making semiconductor training more accessible and affordable. The early case is strong. Prototype testing with 15 users delivered an average System Usability Score of 70 across students, academics and engineers. The platform costs £30 a month, compared with around £800 for traditional industry-led training, making it more than 26 times cheaper. If pilots reduce graduate time-to-productivity by 33%, some employers could save up to £100,000 while building more local design capability.
